Mother Nature continued her assault against the state last night. Part of the DFW area received almost seven inches of rain overnight. For our part, we received something around two inches. Yes, the house flooded again. Yes, I took precautions. But that still meant that before my first cup of coffee, I was pulling up wet towels and dragging out the shop vac to such up the last of the water.
So, let’s make it official. Mother Nature, we thank you most humbly for ending the drought but could you please hold off on the rain for a bit? At least until the ground dries out a little?
As frustrated as I am with the situation here at the house, I really feel for those folks who have been driven out of their homes by all the rain. I’m also feeling lucky. They showed video of the underpass where we almost stalled out last weekend. There was so much rain in that part of town that it made what we saw Saturday night look like a light drizzle. The water level was so high at that underpass that it truly did become unpassable. The fire department put up blockades and idiots still tried to go around them.
Tried being the operative word. I saw four or five vehicles stalled out after the water receded, one flipped on its side. That means there were probably another several that weren’t in the video shot.
The latest forecast I heard says we will have another 2 – 4 inches of rain over the next couple of days but that we should see the sun for at least the first part of next week. This is good news. The bad is I don’t know if we can get things dried out in the house enough to do the repairs that I want to get done before my son comes home. This is not good, but he will understand. I just don’t want him thinking he needs to help with them while he is here. That is his time and I would much rather spend it with him doing something fun.
The one good thing to come out of all this, aside from the drought ending, is that I now have four books plotted out in my head. I have also figured out the publishing schedule I have to hit. I am going to keep working on Skeletons in the Closet because, well, it demands it. But the next book to come out will be Nocturnal Challenge. The second book will be Honor from Ashes and the endiug as I foresee it confirms what I suspected when I finished Duty from Ashes (Honor and Duty Book 2) — there will be at least one more book in the series. The third book will be Daggar of Elanna, the follow-up to Sword of Arelion (Sword of the Gods Book 1). All three books should be done before the end of the year. I know that sounds like I am pushing it and, in a way, I am. But with the plots firmly set in my head, it is simply a matter of sitting down and writing them and then sending them to their respective beta readers and editors.
The fourth book is one that will break my usual pattern. It is a military fantasy and I am writing it with a mind to send it to Baen. I have most of that plot figured out and hope to have the first few chapters written before LibertyCon.
And, before Amber starts pinging me, yes, Skeletons in the Closet will be finished as well. I anticipate it will be done by Halloween. I don’t think it will be more than a long novella/short novel. But it looks like it might be the first in a series of stories set in the same universe. Yeah, yeah, I know. I have problems writing standalone novels. Don’t blame me. Blame Myrtle the Muse.
Now to get busy. I have fans to reposition and damage to assess. And coffee. Must have more coffee.
