Revisiting the Past

Yesterday, over at Mad Genius Club, I wrote in more detail about some of the decisions I’d been weighing when it came to my writing. I’d like to expound on that a little bit more.

I’ve been lucky so far with my writing career. It’s not made me a best seller but I make enough to meet my bills. Sure, there are some months that are leaner than others but that’s a risk I’ve been willing to take. One thing I’ve preached all along but haven’t always been good about doing is treating writing like a job. It is more than an avocation, it is a profession and should be looked at as such. That means doing all the boring things that are part and parcel of the whole.

The last several weeks, I’ve been exposed to some new software as well as discussion and a book or two that help with the whole “be a pro” part of the equation. I’ve read the book, twice now, and I’ve played with three different software releases. And I’ve come to a couple of decisions.

Rattle Them ChainsThe first is I am going to delay the release of Rattle Them Chains as discussed yesterday. I want to do a quick release of it and Bell, Book and What? (working title). They will come out no more than a month apart. That means Rattle is being pushed back until mid-September with Bell coming after that. The timing is better for both anyway because of their plots and genre.

This also gives me time to try an experiment. I’m going to be pulling one of my older series from sale at the end of this month. But don’t worry, if you’ve already purchased it, it will still be in your library. Shortly afterward, I will be re-launching the series. It will have new covers, new series title, new book titles (for at least two books) and the books will be reformatted and, in at least one instance, heavily re-edited. There will be some new material in each book, some books will have more than others. I’m doing this for two reasons. The first is because the series has plateaued on sales and I want to see if this will give it a boost. The second is that, after several years of thinking the series dead, Myrtle the Evil Muse has infected me with a new book that continues the series.

Behind the scenes on that series, as well as on all my other work, I’ll be updating categories and key words, redoing blurbs where needed and some of the books will be getting new covers. I will also be getting print versions out for everything.

Then, for the first time, I will be putting concerted effort into advertising. This is where I’ve been weakest and why I feel fortunate to have had the success I’ve had so far. So, if you hear thudding coming from the DFW area over the next few weeks and months, it’s just me banging my head against the wall as I adapt to this new mindset and schedule.

Even though that sounds like a lot, it isn’t going to stop my new work from being written and released. I wouldn’t do that to myself or to you guys. It simply means that for the next week to 10 days, I’m focusing on refocusing, on getting into this new headspace . Then I’ll get back to publishing new work and re-launching the old. If everything goes according to plan, the next four months will see at least three new titles and the series relaunch. It will be busy times but those are the best.

For now, if you need something to read, check out my Amazon author page. You’ll find all my work, even that done under my pen names, listed there.
